Translation

Onomatopentenshi

Don tsuku dzuku don tsuku dzuku pan!
Don tsuku dzuku don tsuku dzuku pan tantaka pan!
Don tsuku dzuku don tsuku dzuku pan!
Don tsuku dzuku don tsuku dzuku toobanjan!1

Tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi utsukushii tsukushi
tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi!2

The priest skilfully rubbed his cheeks against the screen at the family restaurant he entered by chance.3
Violent times on Valentine’s Day. So sorry for cutting and running!
Drunkards, good slaves, and old souls. The miso ramen is sharply seasoned.4
It doesn’t matter how much the salmon babies scream, she won’t hatch out.

They’re so outspoken. At best, it’s a loss of a trillion yen.
The direct talks will soon be completely done.

Tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi utsukushii tsukushi
tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi tsukushi!

He and Professor lovey-dovey Lovecraft will ignite their hearts.
It’s what that very Johnny Depp says: “Watch out for the pigeons.”
Oh, wait up—the automata can’t stop suddenly.
What a worthwhile workplace.
(It’s my personal opinion.)

Here and there and everywhere, through this and that they lost ten trillion yen.
Small profits and quick returns. This and that is completely done.

Shanbarariya, Shanbararuya!
My toes are numbing so I pray to a deity, ya ya ya!
Onomatopoeia, onomatopoeia,
they become words and sounds. Dancing low, talking about the tower.5
The waves ebb and flow.
When all’s said and done, it’s too late! It’s a disruption.6

Ah, around Mukaishima, some youths have been saying some strange words since long ago.
They light up with a boom, then go vroom and rattle away going ‘takatsuku’… no relation to Takatsu-ku in Kawasaki.
Well, anyway, the weird words coming up are what the Onomatopetenshi riddle their speech with, or so the rumours say.
They’re popular on the streets, and now dealers and rulers can’t keep going.

“Knock-knock, knock-knock. Master, master! Are you awake?
It’s me. I’m Ibukichi, the one who sells smoked pickles.”
“I’m opening the door. Seriously, Ibukichi. What time do ya think it is?”
“Um, well… it’s…!”
“Eh, come and have some tea or something and calm down!”

“Gee, thanks! *Gulp, gulp* Ah!
It’s serious! Those scoundrels have appeared at the corner over there!”
“Really?! They’re at it again? My business is doomed now.”
“Looks like there’s eight of them this time. The women are badgering the Daikan, so he’s on edge.”
“He’s quite thin, so licking his lips and chirruping like that is inexcusable!”
“You can hear cicadas and hammer blows, too.”
“Hah, it’s unbearable. I can’t stop using onomatopoeia. I never tire of it.”
This was a real place of business.

Papparapara, pappapparappa, lewd, bam!
Papparapara, pappapparappa.
Papparapara, pappapparappa, lewd person!
Papparapara, pappapparappa.

Shanbarariya, Shanbararuya!
My toes are numbing so I pray to a deity, ya ya ya!
Onomatopoeia, onomatopoeia,
they become words and sounds. Dancing low, talking about the tower.
Chiri tote, chiri shan, gold bottle tower.
The waves ebb and flow.
When all’s said and done, it’s too late!
By the way, that prostate tased so good! It’s a disruption.

  • 1. This stanza contains several food puns, with 丼 (don, from donburi, a rice-bowl meal) standing in for どん (don – *bang*), and 豆板醤 (toobanjan – toobanjan) adding some rhythmic contrast at the end.
  • 2. This stanza continues the food references and plays on the similarities between 土筆 (tsukushi – horsetail shoots) and 美しい (utsukushii – beautiful).
  • 3. This line is a modification of a Japanese tongue-twister.
  • 4. The three words used at the start of this line all sound similar. They also sound like the words used when yodelling.
  • 5. 談洲楼 (danshuurou) seems to be a coined word with no particular meaning, but may have been chosen due to its similarity to ‘Dancing low.’
  • 6. 茶茶 (chacha) has its own meaning but may be used here for rhythmic effect, like in the cha-cha dance.

I am Moana

[Gramma Tala:]
One girl of the island
Isn't like the rest of the girls
She loves the ocean and the water
And hundreds of people are proud of her
Life might seem tough
A life that leaves behind pain in the heart
The pains will heal and dreams are what'll
Remain

Life events teach us,
And we follow those we love
But nothing can hold back
The whisper inside of us
And when it asks 'Who am I?'
Moana, you know
Moana, come on, say it, don't you know?

[Moana:]
Who am I?
I am a girl who loves the island
And loves the water of the ocean
It calls me
I am the daughter of the chief
Descended from sailors (voyagers)
Who roamed the sea and the seas
(They) call me
Just like you, I've overcome dangers
And spread my sails
Everything I've seen still calls me

That hidden sound still calls me
Just like waves that fill my imagination
You'll remain in my heart, a sound that reminds me
that whatever path I take
I am Moana!

On the Path That I Take

On the path that I take
Shines the sun, shines the moon
Shine love, light and power
Every day and every night

Even if the destination is far
It is the path that keeps me up
In my heart shines a star
That guides me through this world

Whatever happens to me
On my journey over the sea
I always have trust
In the path that I take

Doraemon, you, will make true

Look where I look, go
where I go,
you are into my heart. (You are into my heart)
You fill my dreams.
I want to go through doors,
travel around the world.
—The take-copter!

I want to fly through the sky and
watch with your adventures,
go to a far country.
Quick, now open the door
and, like that, we all together, can go.
—Anywhere door!

I know that one day I will get older
and, maybe, I will forget this,
but you never stop thinking
that friendship will join us.

Xa-la-la-la-la. The dream will shine,
it never turns off. Don't stop dreaming.
Doraemon, you, will make true
all the wishes I dreamed about.

Xa-la-la-la-la. Let's sing a song.
We have to stick each one around, give all us the hands.
Doraemon, you, fill of your color
all this world all we happy will be.

Your Scent

Your scent reminds me of a fountain's water,
And it's a mystery how water turns to fire within you...
Your scent is arousing, it's innocent
And it even seems to be stronger when you're absent!

I don't know whether you lend its perfume to your scent,
For I feel that nobody else has a scent like yours
Maybe you are the one most desired by your scent,
I even suspect that it envies you.

[Chorus:]
It's the essence
That lives in this fado's very skin,
It's a lewd thing
That leaves my song like this, completely drunk.
It's an aroma lighter than shadow, softer than light:
Your scent blends both water and fire!

It's a smell that bludgeons my five senses,
What I'm seeing with my ears is becoming part of me.
How is it possible for your scent to be able
To reach everything and even make my smile fragrant?

And in this scented hour, which becomes eternal,
Your smell is more than a scent of certainty
It's a way for me to feel that time itself
Has already managed to soak your scent into longing.

[Chorus:]
It's the essence
That lives in this fado's very skin,
It's a lewd thing
That leaves my song like this, completely drunk.
It's an aroma lighter than shadow, softer than light:
Your scent blends both water and fire!

[Instrumental]

[Chorus:]
It's the essence
That lives in this fado's very skin,
It's a lewd thing
That leaves my song like this, completely drunk.
It's an aroma lighter than shadow, softer than light:
Your scent blends both water and fire!
